Album Cover

I put together a mock-up of an idea for the 1D Album cover. I wanted to play with the idea of 'schoolboy humor' so decided to have each member scan their faces. I wanted to make the band show their fun sides, its meant to be playful and young. I then used quite earthy-sepia tones to echo the boys All Saints-ish styling.

Merch ideas

Just some ideas for the merchandise, |Ive made them quite all saints inspired, washed out and vintagey. Each member has thier own t-shirt, a bit of a "whos your fave" idea.

I have found out that some of the boys do play instruments, they shoud use that to set them a side from bands like The Wanted. Nail plays the Guitar, Liam plays the Piano and the Guitar and Louis also plays the Piano...

After Formative....

Notes and feedback from other groups:

-Give your target audience a face! maybe pictures. who are they? what do they do? read? listen to?
-Show qualitative research
-Don't tell them stuff they already know!! (e.g. the xfactor stuff)
-Use hardly any text of slide show, more pictures than writing

We need to make a key decision: Do we want to market One Direction as a JLS-type r'n'b band? or more of a McFly guitar-based band??

Some ideas:

-Do some cool album artwork, something unexpected and abstract maybe??
-Merch- maybe stuff more interesting than just t-shirts?
-Research into the boy's backstory- is there anything more than just X factor we could use to their advantage?
-Can any of them play musical instruments?
-Maybe they could collaborate with Abercrombie? do a live gig at Abercombie in London? if not Jack Wills/Hollister/Superdry?
-Get them to do a radio 1 live lounge- like the Saturdays "beggin'" one (one of them played the guitar, it was unexpected and showed them as singers more then just a manufactured band)
-A competition? get 1D to perform at your school?
-Bliss/Sugar mag partnership?

FORMATIVES!!

Ok so we had a group meeting today to sort out our powerpoint for friday, my job is to research One Direction's key demographic. I found their target audience to be the "tweens" and the "x factor mums".

"Tween"- about 9-15 years old, one of those disney/twilight loving kids, desperate to grow up (growing up a bit too fast)

"X-factor Mum"- kind of self-explanatory - about 30-55, loves meeting up with friends and having fun but her family is the most important thing to her, mostly listens to music on the radio, enjoys shopping and looking good, yoga etc.

To market One Direction, we'll obviously have to play off the fact that young girls love them. I'd say that their target audience would be a girl aged between 8-15

Funnily enough i found myself sitting next to a group of "Tween" girls on the train the other day and managed to make a few observations. They were all about 12 years old and were on a school trip. They were all trying hard to act older than their years, each with either an i-phone or a blackberry (which i found very surprising!). They were talking about what shops they like and said that they liked H&M stuff because they have stylish stuff in their sizes, they also talked about shopping at Claire's Accessories and one of them was wearing and Abercrombie & Fitch hoodie.

I was thinking that maybe we could do a One Direction iphone/blackberry app maybe telling secret info about the band, intimate gigs or ticket pre-sales?
I was also thinking maybe we could get the boys to model for H&M?...the kids bit though obviously, it would draw girls into the store, and i think that the bands popularity with girls might make young boys shop there too, saying "if you look like this you could get girls too" maybe? as well as bringing the band back into the public eye, as they have been out of it a bit since the series finished
